Embedding a Panopto video in Canvas Using the RCE Apps button

While faculty can add the link to their Panopto videos in Canvas, embedding Panopto videos directly in Canvas is the recommended method for a seamless student experience. It also provides another layer of privacy to your lecture videos.

While you can upload the video directly to your Canvas course using the Panopto tool in the rich content editor (RCE), we do recommend that you first upload your video to Panopto directly. This will allow you to easily reuse the video in multiple courses in the same term. Detailed instructions for uploading can be found at:

This method should be used to embed a Panopto video that you own. If the Panopto video was shared with you, we recommend using the Embed code to embed the shared Panopto video. Detailed instructions can be found at Embedding a Panopto video in Canvas Using the RCE Apps button.

If necessary, create a new item in Canvas, such as a page or a discussion. (Embedding a video in a "discussion" promotes student engagement by providing an area students can ask questions and exchange ideas.)

Click the new item and then click Edit.

Click the Panopto logo or click the Apps button and scroll down to Panopto Recordings.

Locate and select the desired video [1]. (You can also Upload and Record directly into the course as well.)
Click the Video Embed Options button.

Select the desired option for Enable "Watch in Panopto" [1].
  1. Check the Enable "Watch in Panopto" box, if you would like to provide students the option of watching the video from the Panopto website [1]. (This is recommended if students are expected to manually switch between video streams.)
  2. Uncheck the Enable "Watch in Panopto" box, if you prefer students to watch the video only inside of Canvas [1]. (This reduces the possibility of students sharing the video's link with others.)
Click Insert [2]. The video is now embedded in Canvas.
